America’s history can also be told through astronomy.

 




Long before the United States became a scientific power, a revolution was already taking place in the way humanity understood the Universe.

Copernicus moved Earth from the center of the Universe. Kepler discovered that planets move around the Sun in elliptical orbits. Galileo turned the telescope toward the sky and revealed a Universe far more complex than anyone had imagined. Then, in 1687, Isaac Newton explained the motion of planets and other bodies through the universal law of gravity.

These discoveries changed more than astronomy. They changed the way educated people thought about order, nature and the world around them.

When the American Revolution began, these ideas were already part of intellectual life in the colonies. Benjamin Franklin was interested in science, and John Winthrop, Harvard’s professor of mathematics and natural philosophy, was an accomplished astronomer. In 1761, Winthrop travelled to Newfoundland to observe the transit of Venus across the Sun — one of the great astronomical events used by scientists to improve measurements of the Solar System.

After independence, astronomy acquired another meaning.

The new republic wanted to prove that it was not simply a former colony, but a nation capable of producing its own science and knowledge. The stars therefore became part of the political imagination as well as the scientific one.

The old European political image had often placed a king at the centre, like the Sun at the centre of the planetary system. American republican thinkers began to imagine something different: a constellation of states, with no king at the centre. This astronomical language became particularly powerful during and after the Revolution, and eventually found its most famous expression in the American flag.

But America’s relationship with astronomy did not stop with symbols.

Thomas Jefferson believed that a young republic needed science and education. At the University of Virginia, he planned an observatory as part of his educational vision and even converted a building for astronomical observations in the 1820s.

John Quincy Adams went even further. In 1825 he proposed the creation of a national observatory. Almost two decades later, the United States Naval Observatory was established in Washington. It was not simply a place for looking at stars. Accurate astronomy was essential for navigation, mapping, longitude and precise time.

One of the most curious examples was the Observatory’s time ball. Beginning in 1845, the ball was dropped at precisely calculated local solar noon so people in Washington could set their clocks. Ships could also use the signal to check their chronometers. Later, the Observatory’s time service transmitted accurate signals by telegraph, eventually helping railroads across the country keep the correct time.

At the same time, American astronomy was becoming a real scientific discipline.

Observatories began appearing at universities and colleges. Harvard appointed William Cranch Bond as its first Astronomical Observer in 1839, and its great 15-inch refractor, installed in 1847, became the largest telescope in the United States for two decades. Yale, Williams College, West Point and other institutions were also developing astronomical facilities.

Then came another fascinating development: American astronomers were no longer simply following European astronomy. They were adopting new mathematical and observational methods and making their own discoveries. In 1854, James Ferguson, working with the U.S. Naval Observatory’s 9.6-inch refractor, discovered the minor planet Euphrosyne — the first minor planet discovered by an American.

By the time America entered the Civil War, astronomy had travelled a remarkable distance: from European scientific revolution, to colonial science, to the intellectual world of the Founding Fathers, and finally to permanent American observatories and professional astronomers.

The stars had become more than symbols on a flag.

They were part of America’s scientific ambition, its political imagination and its attempt to understand its place in the Universe.

And perhaps that is the most fascinating part of the story: while America was building a new nation on Earth, its scientists were also learning to look much farther beyond it.
