Discovered by E. E. Barnard Discovery date 9 September 1892 Amalthea is a moon of Jupiter. It has the third closest orbit around Jupiter among known moons and was the fifth moon of Jupiter to be discovered, so it is also known as Jupiter V. Edward Emerson Barnard discovered the moon on 9 September 1892 and named it after Amalthea of Greek mythology. Amalthea was the last moon in the solar system to be discovered through direct visual observation. Barnard using the 91 cm telescope at Lick Observatory. It was also the first moon of Jupiter to be discovered since Galileo's discovery of Galilean Moons in 1610. Amalthea has two known mountains, Mons Lyctas and Mons Ida with local relief reaching up to 20 kilometers. The surface is dark and reddish in color apparently caused by a dusting of sulfur originating from Io's volcanoes. It is exposed to the intense Jovian radiation field. It continuously receives high doses of energetic ions, protons, and electrons produced by the Jovian magnetosphere. The surface of Amalthea is very red, its reflectivity increases with a wavelength from green to infrared.

The period of the revolution of Amalthea is 12 days. The rotation around its axis is synchronous, ie, 12 days. Its surface is cratered. Its craters are very large compared to the size of Amalthea. Amalthea is made of ice and debris very porous. Pan crater, the largest, measuring 100 km in diameter, and is deep at least 8 km. The crater, Gaea, measuring 80 km, it is about twice as deep as Pan. Amalthea has two mountains and Mons Ida Mons Lyctas. Amalthea orbits Jupiter at a distance of 181,000 km.

It was named after Amalthea from Greek mythology. The discovery of its 5-kilometer satellite was announced in July 2017.
